Failing the exam often means the termination of a student's formal education. Students may decide to go the vocational education route or repeat class 6 or the 6th grade and retake the exam again the following year. 

The Sierra Leone Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is the main examination to qualify students for admission into senior secondary school. Students may decide to go the vocational education route or repeat Junior Secondary School (JSS) Three(3) or 9th grade and retake the exam again the following year
